Blue Marlin Fishinig in Punta Cana report
Punta Cana Offshore fishing and Blue Marlin offshore catching
Hello, all you fishermen and my good friends from sunny Punta Cana, Dominican Republic and Bavaro beach resorts! To all you fishing fanatics out there who love catching marlin. Blue or white marlin actually the fishing technique is the same!
December 26th, 2015, was an unforgettable day! I was lucky enough to meet an incredible fisherman named Ali and his family! They booked a private fishing charter with our company Big Marlin Charters for six hours — and it was the best decision they could have made here in Punta Cana!
I picked them up with our minivan bus at 7:30 am, and close to 8 AM we were already leaving the marina Jelly Fish for the open water Atlantic Ocean and in 40 min. begin fishing! Mr. Ali and his son made themselves comfortable on the cockpit and eagerly awaiting the fish. Amanda, his wife, was sunbathing on the fly bridge fishing boat Fortuna, seemingly indifferent to the fishing expedition, but clearly enjoying the sun and the view. From the very beginning, it was clear that she wasn’t interested in fishing, but that was okay! Sometimes, women and fishing just don’t mix. But that doesn’t mean they can’t have fun together!
The ocean was calm that day, with no waves at all! May be 3 feet waves and it’s nothing for the Big Atlantic Ocean. The wind was a perfect easterly breeze, just right for us to use all the lines on the reels! We set off on the Macao direction (please don’t confuse it with Chinese Macau!) with high hopes of a great day ahead! In just one hour, the reel started to sing, and Mr. Ali pulled aboard a barracuda! It was a whopper at 10 pounds and 2 feet long! In another 20 minutes, the right reel started to hum, and Mr. Ali’s son reeled in another barracuda!
We passed Macao area and passed Hard Rock resort and continued moving towards Uvero Alto area. Deep water like 7000 ft. In half an hour, the upped reel worked. All our reels are Penn International, and they’re built to last. We love Penn but old models reels. They’re good, reliable reels and still made in the USA. They’re not some Chinese toy like now)).
Mr. Ali easily pulled up a Mahi Mahi that weighed 15 pounds and was 2 feet long. Him and his son were very happy. Then we were met by dolphins for a short while. Amanda was really excited. She was shouting from the top of the boat, pointing out where she could see a dolphin. Later on, the dolphins stayed back and didn’t interfere with our fishing.
At around 12:30, near Macao, while we were moving towards Punta Cana, our left reel started making a loud noise WOW!!! and the rod bent in a semicircle. The first mate stopped the reel’s friction and let go, so the hook would get stuck in the fish better. Mr. Ali got into the fighting chair and started pulling the fish up. Incredible! In a few seconds, we saw how the fish made a stand as marlins usually do. Mr. Ali was very careful as he pulled the rod towards himself and reeled the line. When he felt the line got too tight, he let go and pulled up a bit later.
The Captain was moving the boat backwards towards the Marlin. When Mr. Ali got tired, his son took over and started pulling the Marlin up. He fought it for about 40 minutes. We got the fish with a gaff hook and pulled it aboard. It was a blue Marlin weighing about 180 pounds. It wasn’t the biggest blue Marlin, but Mr. Ali and his son were really happy.
We’d love for you to experience the thrill of catching big game fish with us. Those moments are unforgettable, and your fishing trips will be stories you’ll remember forever. Our boat is perfect for every fisherman’s needs. We make sure every day before every trip that you’ll be comfortable and ready to catch a big one.
